‘Hawaii Five-O’s’ Daniel Dae Kim Sells Crime Show to CBS, Nears CW Deal for Female-Driven Drama (Exclusive)

By Jethro Nededog and Jeff Sneider on October 8, 2014

3AD, which was founded by the “Lost” actor, recently sold drama “The Good Doctor” to CBS

On the heels of signing a development deal with CBS Studios just seven months ago, Daniel Dae Kim and his production company 3AD have teamed with Anonymous Content to sell a crime drama, the Untitled Joe Wilson Project, to CBS. 3AD is also finalizing a deal with The CW for a female-driven drama series titled “Lotus,” individuals with knowledge of both deals told TheWrap.

Once the CW deal closes, 3AD will have sold three projects during the current development season. In August, it sold “The Good Doctor,” an adaptation of a Korean drama, to CBS.

In development with CBS TV Studios, the Untitled Joe Wilson Project hails from the long-time “NCIS: LA” veteran who currently serves as a supervising producer on the series. Wilson will pen the project in addition to serving as an executive producer. Kim will serve as an executive producer alongside Anonymous Content’s Doreen Wilcox-Little (“Killer Joe”).

The drama follows a Deputy D.A. who’s disgraced after losing a high-profile, controversial trial and moves back to her childhood home in L.A. where she pairs with a detective to solve local cases that are impenetrable to the police.

Meanwhile, “Lotus” will also be developed at CBS TV Studios. Adam Lash and Cori Uchida (“Helix,” “Sons of Anarchy”) will write the project with Kim set as an executive producer.

“Lotus” is a serialized one-hour drama that follows a young Japanese American woman’s attempt to rebuild her life in the aftermath of a family traged and the dark choices she must make as she’s presented with an offer she cannot refuse.

Founded by Kim, 3AD is led by head of development Lindsay Goffman, who is producing both projects. Kim is currently in his fifth year on the cast of CBS’s “Hawaii Five-O” and will soon be seen in the “Divergent” sequel “Insurgent.”

APA, Anonymous Content and attorney Keith A. Klevan represent Kim. Paradigm and Echo Lake rep Wilson, while Verve, Madhouse and attorney Bruce Gellman represent Lash and Uchida.

You asked, Daniel answered!

Chin Ho Kelly, played by Daniel Dae Kim, has had a lot going on in Season 6 of Hawaii Five-0—including intense family drama and a budding new romance. We sent five popular fan questions to Daniel and here's what we learned from him...

1.
What was the most intense stunt you’ve had to perform?

Probably last season’s fight with Gabriel. It was a knockdown, drag out, good old time.

2.
How do you typically spend your downtime while on set?

I didn't have much downtime this year, I have to say. I started a production company called 3AD, and whenever I get a chance, I work on making it a success. It's been a labor of love and with any luck you'll be seeing some of my shows in the near future.

3.
What were some of the Season 6 highlights for you?

My story line with Julie Benz's character, Abby.
My fight scene with Christopher Sean's character, Gabriel.
Getting to see Chin's goofy side in the Valentine's Day episode.
Getting more time on the motorcycle.

4.
What are three things you can share about the season finale?
It puts two of our main characters in a life or death situation.
It tests the limits of what we are willing to do for one another as members of Five-0.
It brings the entire ohana together.

5.
Would you ever consider doing a musical episode of Hawaii Five-0?

Sure! I think that would be fun. Scott can sing, so can Jorge. I've heard Chi rap as well. As long as it's done in a loving fun spirit I'm all for it.

Daniel wurde nach seinen 10 Top Episoden von Hawaii Five-0 befragt

Daniel Dae Kim Picks His Top 10 Hawaii Five-0 Episodes
The actor, known for playing Chin Ho Kelly, shares ten great episodes for you to watch

Number 1: "Ho'onani Makuakane" (Episode 10, Season 4 of Hawaii Five-0)
The memorable Pearl Harbor episode.

Daniel: "This one is the top for me because I think TV is at its best when it can educate, as well as entertain. This story in particular is one that I'm proud to be a part of, especially given the controversy surrounding the subject of immigrants and discrimination in our national discourse recently."

Number 2:   "Kuka'awale" (Episode 17, Season 5 of Hawaii Five-0)
Directed by Daniel Dae Kim and features the longest car-guement in show history.

Daniel: "It was so much fun (and hard work!) to direct I have to put this one right near the top. I'm still grateful for the opportunity and would love to do it again sometime."

Number 3: "Ua Hala" (Episode 23, Season 2 of Hawaii Five-0)
The Season 2 finale where Chin is forced to pick between his wife and his cousin.

Daniel: "I loved this episode because it was when the show was new and we were all discovering who Chin Ho really is. To see him in a crisis with the highest stakes as part of the season finale was special and so much fun as an actor to play."

Number 4: "Hana Lokomaika’i" (Episode 13, Season 4 of Hawaii Five-0)
Chin Ho is put under a microscope when Internal Affairs launches an investigation into his ties to Gabriel Waincroft.

Daniel: "I loved this episode because in a show that features so much action and crime solving, it was nice to sit and have some straight up 'mano a mano' acting scenes. The writing was top notch and Robert Knepper was a fantastic scene partner. It felt like we were playing a chess match with our intentions and I distinctly remember leaving set on those days feeling very creatively satisfied."

Number 5: "Olelo Ho'opa'i Make" (Episode 13, Season 3 of Hawaii Five-0)
Chin goes to jail and works with Sang Min to escape.

Daniel: "I loved this episode because it was so great to work with Will Yun Lee and Jason Scott Lee. They’re both good friends and we laughed the whole time together. Not to mention that we had a great storyline to work with that showcased the talents of two fantastic actors."

Number 6: "Aloha Ke Kahi I Ke Kahi" (Episode 1, Season 4 of Hawaii Five-0)
Henry Ian Cusick, close friend and fellow Lost alum, guest stars.

Daniel: "Have to put this one in there because anytime I got to work with a Lost alum it’s a treat, and this episode featured two of them at once."

Number 7: "Piko Pau 'iole (Episode 8, Season 6 of Hawaii Five-0)
The first episode featuring guest star Julie Benz as Abby Dunn.

Daniel: "Julie's been a great addition to the show, with on camera and off. Happy she's here."

Number 8: "Kahu" (Episode 11, Season 3 of Hawaii Five-0)
George Takei guest stars as Chin's uncle.

Daniel: "LOVE Mr. Takei and was so happy to get to work with him."

Number 9: "La O Na Makuahine" (Episode 1, Season 3 of Hawaii Five-0)
Chin seeks revenge for his wife's death by going after corrupt ex-cop Frank Delano.

Daniel: "This was the first time we saw how far Chin Ho was willing to go to avenge his family. It was dark, yet revealing."

Number 10: "Hoa 'inea" (Episode 14, Season 6 of Hawaii Five-0)
Chin in a towel—need we say more?

Daniel: "Um, let’s just say that the embarrassment you see in that scene isn’t really acting. But so much fun to see Chin in a different light!"
