Son of original Chin Ho portrayer meets actor Daniel Dae Kim

Not even Hollywood could have scripted this encounter:

The son of Chin Ho Kelly meets the new Chin Ho Kelly.

Honolulu actor Dennis Chun, whose father, Kam Fong, played Chin Ho in the original "Hawaii Five-0," was at the recent showcase by the local Academy of Film & Television when he spotted the actor who will play the role in the CBS remake: Daniel Dae Kim. So he walked up and introduced himself.

"I told him he will do the show proud and do Dad proud," Chun said. "I wanted to wish him all the best. He was very grateful for that and very gracious."

Hawaii Five-0′s Daniel Dae Kim shares favorite scenes of Season 3

As part of their season-end promotion, CBS asked Hawaii Five-0′s Daniel Dae Kim to pick his three favorite scenes of the past season. Kim’s choices, and his thoughts on each, are linked below at the CBS website. (full article here)

Telling Danno About the First Time He Met Malia

“This was a favorite because it was a totally unguarded moment between two characters. Most of the time, we see team members’ interactions centered around a case, but here Chin got a chance to open up to Danny about something deeply personal. It was nice to see his vulnerable side, as well as Danno’s.”

Final Fight With Kaleo

“This was a standout to me mainly because I so enjoy working with Jason and Will. They are both such talented, generous actors and there was such a natural rapport with both of them. It’s a very rare thing when Asian American actors are able to share the screen together in a non-stereotypical way, and I’m proud of 5-0 for creating those opportunities week after week.”

Malia’s Death

“These scenes were meaningful to me because they represented such deep, unmitigated loss. For an actor, they can be some of the most difficult, yet rewarding scenes to play. Taking something as intensely personal as the loss of a loved one and allowing it to be shared with millions of viewers is part of what makes TV so powerful as a storytelling medium.”

Artikel über Daniel Dae Kim (Greg David, August 20, 2013)

Daniel Dae Kim’s addicted to ‘Hawaii Five-0′ ride

Hawaii Five-0‘s producers created a monster when they asked Daniel Dae Kim to ride a motorcycle during an episode. Though he’d never been on one, he jumped at the chance to do it.

Now he’s addicted.

“It’s incredibly unsafe to ride on a regular basis and there are no helmet laws in Hawaii,” Det. Chin Ho Kelly portrayer told TV Guide Canada recently. “You see guys riding around in t-shirts and flip-flops. It’s very dangerous, but there is no sports car on the planet that compares to a fast motorcycle in terms of exhilaration. It is so much fun to just get out there and see the world around you without windshields and doors. I love it.”

The South Korea-born actor has had a beautiful world to look for a decade. Kim’s been calling Oahu home since 2004, when Lost began its six-season run, and Season 4 of Hawaii Five-0 is set to bow next month.

Daniel Dae Kim is proud of ‘Hawaii Five-0′ for its minority representation

Victoria Ahearn, The Canadian Press Oct 10, 2013

TORONTO – South Korean native Daniel Dae Kim says skirting Asian stereotypes is something that’s been important to him since he started his acting career, first onstage in classic plays and improv comedy and then in onscreen projects including the film “Crash” and TV’s “Lost.”

And it’s a goal he feels he’s continuing with “Hawaii Five-0,” which is into its fourth season on Global and CBS.

“One of the things I’m proudest of on ‘Hawaii Five-0′ is the fact that we have so much minority representation, and it’s not done in a token way, it’s not done in a stereotypical way,” Kim, 45, said in an interview.

“All of us have interesting characters to play, and that is a great direction for television to go in.”

The police drama, which airs Fridays, stars Kim as Det. Chin Ho Kelly, who made a career comeback after wrongful corruption allegations and is fiercely loyal to his job as well as his family.

He’s also a skilled motorcyclist, which Kim wasn’t when he signed on to the series.

“The very first day we had a little mishap, just because I was so focused on so many different things at once and it was kind of a car chase/motorcycle chace, and we had to come to a screeching halt and I forgot to put the stand down on the bike,” he said.

“A Harley is about 600 pounds and so the bike started leaning over and I was supposed to be running away, but I wasn’t going to let that bike hit the ground so I ended up doing my best to make sure it stayed up.”

The physicality of the role is one Kim said he adapted to just fine, having already lived an active lifestyle prior to signing on to the series.

“When you live in Hawaii and you’re able to be outdoors year-round, it’s easy to maintain,” added the strapping star, who grew up in New York and Pennsylvania and was named by People magazine as one of the Sexiest Men Alive in 2005.

“I love to run, I’ll play tennis, I’ll get to the gym when I can. And it’s nice that the other guys on the show are similar, so we’ll all just kind of stay in shape together.”

Those other guys include Scott Caan as Det. Danny (Danno) Williams and Alex O’Loughlin as task force leader Steve McGarrett. Also starring is Vancouver’s Grace Park of “Battlestar Galactica” fame as officer Kono Kalakua.

The series is a remake of one that had a remarkable life span, from 1968-80.

Kim said he isn’t sure if this current incarnation will last as long.

“For any show to last 12 years in today’s entertainment landscape is a rarity. If we get to that milestone, I would be very grateful. It’s a great gig, it’s a great job and it’s nice to have stability for an actor.”

Stability is also particularly important to Kim, given he has two children, and it’s something he’s been able to achieve with this series and the now-ended “Lost” both being filmed in Hawaii.

“The fact that they’ve been able to grow up in one place for as long as I have, it’s a blessing,” said Kim, whose other credits include the films “Spider-Man 2″ and “The Adjustment Bureau” and the TV series “CSI” and “24.”

“Ten years in Hawaii. I think I’m pretty lucky.”

This Friday’s episode of “Hawaii Five-0″ features guest star Jorge Garcia, who co-starred with Kim on “Lost,” as a conspiracy theorist who helps the force on a double murder case.

‘Hawaii Five-0′ star Daniel Dae Kim happy to live and work in paradise

Global News, John R. Kennedy, 11.10.2013

TORONTO — Regular viewers of Hawaii Five-0 can’t be blamed for thinking the beautiful islands are crawling with violent criminals.

“We give the impression that Hawaii is the most dangerous place on the planet,” concedes Daniel Dae Kim, who stars as Chin Ho Kelly on the popular series.

The 45-year-old married father of two actually considers himself lucky to have spent the past decade living in the tropical paradise while working on Lost and Hawaii Five-0.

“It happened to be a coincidence that another show was coming in at the same time that Lost was ending,” the South Korean actor told Global News, “and it happened to be good enough to stay on the air.”

In both series, Kim shared scenes with Canadian talent — Alberta-born Evangeline Lilly on Lost and B.C.-raised Grace Park on Hawaii Five-0.

“I guess the Canadians are the keys to success,” he jokes.

Kim said he looks forward to getting scripts in which his character is put in jeopardy or has to deal with a personal relationship.

“That’s the stuff that’s the most fun for me,” he explained. “The ‘crime of the week’ element of the show has its own appeal but the character stuff, for me, is the stuff I feel like I’ve been trained to do.”

Kim also believes viewers want more than action scenes and eye candy.

“The relationships, when they’re more fully fleshed out, I think they’re interesting and I think they inform the cases.”

One relationship on the show that gets plenty of scrutiny is that of detectives Danny Williams (Scott Caan) and Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin).

“It’s a bromance in every sense of the word,” says Kim. “There are websites that have alluded to that and have been pretty graphic about their relationship.”

Will Danny and Steve ever hook up?

“I think so,” Kim replies with a laugh.

Daniel Dae Kim still making waves in 'Hawaii Five-0'

Toronto Sun, Bill Harris, 5.12.2013

Daniel Dae Kim feels he's more than justified in "trumpeting" his TV series Hawaii Five-0.

"Our show goes beyond a typical procedural in that it really does try to give the characters personal lives," Kim says.

"That's the stuff that kind of keeps me going, as I discover more about (Chin Ho Kelly, his character).

"For example, in an episode late last season I found out that Chin Ho played jazz trumpet. I never knew that before."

Oh my God, did you immediately have to start practising?

"I think that's Season 10, the jazz trumpet episode," Kim says with a laugh.

Hawaii Five-O, which airs Fridays on CBS and Global, is in the midst of its fourth season. I have to admit, as a reboot of the original Hawaii Five-O, which aired from 1968 to 1980, I was skeptical if anyone would connect with this new version when it debuted in 2010.

"You can be blunt, I don't mind," Kim says. "If you look back at the history of, I guess you call them reboots, or remakes, the track record is pretty spotty.

"But Hawaii Five-0 is a genre that people tend to like, especially on CBS, where shows like NCIS and CSI, the procedurals, tend to do really well. I think it's familiar, it's comfort food to a lot of viewers. The combination of that genre and the beautiful scenery of Hawaii, along with a brand that people were familiar with, kind of makes it. And I'd like to give the actors a little credit, too, I think we do a pretty good job.

"In Season 4 we have been able to branch out and make it a little more our own. And I think it's necessary for a different time and a different place. Actually, not a different place, it's still Hawaii. But Hawaii has changed a great deal, and the audiences have changed a great deal, and TV sensibilities have changed a great deal. So we, I think quite rightly, made adjustments."

Kim certainly is a role model for actors hoping to work in great locales. When he was playing Jin-Soo Kwon in Lost, he got to live in Hawaii, because that's where the show was shot. Same deal, obviously, with Hawaii Five-0.

"I didn't have to pack up, which was nice," Kim says, "But it's really funny because I always was the guy on Lost who saved all of my boxes because I always thought my character was going to get killed off early.

"So if I were to buy something, like a TV, I would save the box that the TV came in the whole time. And I still have it. It has been there now for 10 years. But I never take anything for granted."

That's a good philosophy, Daniel Dae Kim. Like, you never should take for granted that you don't play jazz trumpet. Maybe you do, my friend. Maybe you do.

'Hawaii Five-0' star Daniel Dae Kim to speak at University of Hawaii commencement

May 12, 2014, Duane Shimogawa Reporter- Pacific Business News

Actor Daniel Dae Kim, who is best known for his work as Chin Ho Kelly on the hit CBS crime drama television series, “Hawaii Five-0,” as well as Jin Soo Kwon on ABC's Hawaii-based show, “Lost,” which aired for seven years, is one of the featured speakers at the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s commencement ceremony this weekend.

The 103rd Annual Commencement Exercises, which will be held at the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday, also will feature Kamanaopono Crabbe, CEO of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, who will serve as the advanced degree ceremony speaker; Kim will be the undergraduate degree speaker.

Kim, who has lived in Hawaii for about a decade, signed a deal last October to produce new programs for CBS Television Studios under his own company, called 3AD.

The two-year deal allows him to develop and produce shows for broadcast and cable for the studio, which produces “Hawaii Five-0.”

Kim will continue to star as Chin Ho Kelly on “Hawaii Five-0,” which wrapped up its fourth season ton May 9, with a fifth season on the way.

He has a master's of fine arts degree from New York University and recently served as cultural envoy member of the U.S. Presidential Delegation for the United States at the World Expo in Korea, according to a biography on UH’s website

H50 Summer Scanner – June 5, 2014
June 6th, 2014 by littlesrule

We’ve got some movie news for Hawaii Five-0 fans! Variety reports that Daniel Dae Kim will be joining the Divergent franchise as Jack Kang. He will be appearing along-side stars Shailene Woodley, Theo Thomas, Octavia Spencer, Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts in “The Divergent Series: Insurgent”, the second in the four film series. The movies are based on a trilogy by Veronica Roth with the final book being split into two movies to be released in 2016 and 2017. The first Divergent filmed grossed $267 million. No word on whether Kim will be in the later productions as well.

Filming on the movie has already begun in Atlanta, Georgia. Kim tweeted that Insurgent filming will be what he is “doing this summer”. We hope it will not interfere with the Hawaii Five-0 once filming resumes in July.

Movie synopsis – Insurgent raises the stakes for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the dystopian ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.

Insurgent is set to be released March, 2015.

Hawaii Five-0 Actor/Producer Daniel Dae Kim Endorses Gov. Abercrombie

30.6.2014

HONOLULU – Actor Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Chin Ho Kelly on the CBS television series Hawaii Five-0 and played Jin-Soo Kwon on the ABC series LOST, is endorsing Governor Neil Abercrombie in his 2014 campaign for reelection.

“Governor Abercrombie has been a long-time supporter of the arts,” said Daniel Dae Kim [on location shooting the film, INSURGENT]. “He understands how important tourism is to our local economy and the role that shows like Hawaii Five-0 play in showcasing our beautiful islands to the world. The Governor’s support of Hawaii Five-0 has been integral to the show’s production, and has helped enable it to be seen in more than 200 countries around the world. I am grateful for his advocacy of our local film and television industry.”

“I’m honored to have the support of Daniel Dae Kim,” said Governor Abercrombie. “Showcasing the beauty of our Aloha State in top-rated television shows and award-winning films speaks volumes about Hawai‘i as a world-class film location. Our islands attract more and more visitors from around the world, which is critical to continue the positive momentum of our economy.”

Governor Abercrombie took office in December 2010. He has since turned state finances around, led Hawai‘i out of a recession and invested in modernizing our infrastructure, which has created jobs and reduced unemployment. Hawai‘i now has a strong foundation to advance education for our keiki, improve benefits and services for our seniors and expand stewardship of the environment.

In addition to his career onscreen, Kim recently expanded his industry work to include producing. In January of 2014, he signed a first-look development deal with CBS Television Studios, the first of its kind with an Asian American actor. With his new company, 3AD, he and his team are currently creating original content for both television and film. He can be followed on Twitter and Instagram @danieldaekim and on Facebook. Daniel Dae Kim is repped by APA, Anonymous Content, Klevan/Longarzo and E-PR.

Five-0 Redux: Breaking down Chin Ho Kelly
Aug. 2, 2014 |BY WENDIE BURBRIDGE / Special to the Star-Advertiser

Even after four seasons as veteran cop Chin Ho Kelly on “Hawaii Five-0,” the character played by Daniel Dae Kim is still a bit of an enigma.

We all know how he came to join McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and the Five-0 team, and how his stained past hurt his relationship with his family and then-girlfriend, Malia (Reiko Aylesworth). We all ultimately learned how he was cleared of stealing from the Honolulu Police Department, reinstated as a lieutenant and eventually married Malia while surrounded by his friends and Five-0 family.
